It is only by practicing through a continual succession of agreeable and disagreeable situations that we acquire true strengths. To accept that pain is inherent and to live our lives from this understanding is to create the causes and conditions for happiness. — Suzuki Roshi

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) recognises that life inevitably brings pain and stresses and that the struggle to avoid this fact can lead to clients not living full and meaningful lives. ACT focuses on teaching skills to effectively handle this pain and stress by teaching techniques to help deal with difficult thoughts and feelings. ACT differs from CBT in that distressing thoughts are not challenged and explored looking for more rational or helpful response, instead the thoughts are accepted as just thoughts, and techniques are taught to help clients experience the thought without the emotional impact e.g. so that the thought “I’m unloveable” becomes as innocuous as “I’m eating a grape”. ACT also helps clients to clarify what is important and meaningful to them in their lives with the aim of helping them make a commitment to values based living.
